The Nashville Banner story, taken mostly from a stolen report, about Carol and my involvement in the National Conference for New Politics. We worked as field representatives organizing to get people to attend the conference around the issues of peace and freedom with an alternative for the nineteen sixty-eight presidential election.
In April 1968 we organized a screening of the great labor movie Salt of the Earth with the Southern Conference Educational Fund director, Carl Braden speaking. Two members of the John Birch Society stole the sign-in sheet and pushed Carol down a flight of steps and I ended up being arrested.
The two John Birch Society members and Carol and I were both on trial for disorderly conduct. After some crazy questions and cross-examination the judge dismissed all charges. The moral of the story, don’t chase John Birch Society members who steal a sign-in sheet.
